Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
CBT Training Overview
Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is a foundational training program designed to ensure that all motorcycle/scooter and moped riders acquire a minimum standard of safety and proficiency before riding unaccompanied on public roads.
First introduced in 1990, CBT became mandatory in 1991 for all new motorcycle riders and for new moped (15kW) riders without a car driving license. In 2001, the requirement was extended to include car license holders who wish to ride mopeds. The primary goal of CBT is to reduce accidents by equipping new and inexperienced riders with crucial riding skills.
Included in Your Course:
- Bike rental, insurance and a cuppa
- Instruction by DVSA-approved, experienced motorcycle instructors
- CBT sessions are available nearly every day of the year
What to Expect on the Day
The CBT course is structured into five key elements:
- Element A: Course introduction, eyesight check, and a discussion on appropriate clothing for riding.
- Element B: Familiarization with the bike, including controls, safety checks, and manual handling.
- Element C: Practical off-road riding skills, learning to operate the moped or motorcycle and perform basic maneuvers.
- Element D: A focused discussion on road safety and essential riding tips.
- Element E: A minimum of two hours on-road riding, practicing essential skills like U-turns and emergency stops.
Join us to gain the skills and confidence to ride safely and enjoyably.
The CBT requires a good knowledge of the Highway Code.

Category A2: Restricted Motorcycle License
(Restricted License)
Available to individuals aged 19 and older, this license allows you to ride motorcycles up to 35kW. Training and testing are conducted on one of our restricted (35kW) machines. For guidance on qualifying motorcycles and restrictions, our expert team is here to help.
Category A: Unrestricted Motorcycle License
(Direct Access)
This license is open to individuals 24 years or older, or those who have held a Category A2 license for at least two years. Training involves using a 600cc+ motorcycle, starting on either a 125cc or a 650cc bike, depending on your experience level and progressing as deemed appropriate by your instructor. Passing the test grants an unrestricted license, allowing you to ride motorcycles of any size.

Additional License Categories
AM (Moped License)
Eligible for individuals aged 16 and older, this license category requires passing tests on a 50cc moped. Upon successful completion, you’ll be licensed to operate any vehicle under 50cc with a top speed of 28mph. While a CBT also permits riding in this vehicle category, holding an AM license additionally allows you to ride without L-plates and carry a passenger.
A1 (125 License)
Available to those aged 17 and up, this category involves testing on a 125cc motorcycle. Passing the test grants a license to ride motorcycles up to 125cc with a maximum power of 11kW. While similar to the privileges of a CBT in terms of vehicle power, an A1 license offers permanent validity, the ability to use motorways, ride without L-plates, and take a passenger.
