What is CBT?
Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) was introduced by the government in 1990 to equip new riders with fundamental skills for safe riding before they can ride unaccompanied on the road.
Who needs to take a CBT?
Anyone wishing to ride a motorcycle on the road from the age of 16 must take a CBT. However, if you want to ride a moped (up to 50cc) and passed your car driving test before February 1, 2001, you are exempt from this requirement.
What does a CBT involve?
The CBT includes five elements:
- Introduction, including a helmet, clothing guide, and eyesight test.
- Learning motorcycle controls, daily checks, and maintenance.
- On-site riding.
- Pre-road ride briefing covering the Highway Code and road positioning.
- A road ride including public highway experience.
How long is the CBT course?
The CBT usually lasts up to 7 hours. It may be shorter if you have prior riding experience.
If I take my CBT on an automatic motorbike, can I still ride a manual?
Yes, completing your CBT on an automatic bike still entitles you to ride a manual, and vice versa.
Can you fail a CBT test?
The CBT is a training day rather than a test, so you can’t technically ‘fail.’ However, additional training may be required if you don’t meet the necessary standards to ride on the road, which would involve further costs.
Can I still take my CBT if I don’t have my own motorcycle gear?
Yes, we provide helmets, jackets, and gloves at no extra cost. You are required to wear thick trousers or jeans, a long-sleeved top or T-shirt, and riding or walking boots (not steel-toecapped). Without these, you may be turned away without a refund. Alternatively, DC Motorcycles next-door can supply all your clothing and accessory needs – VISIT HERE
Is all the training completed on-site?
CBT is on our own private area joined onto DC Motorcycles. Mod 1 is exclusive to us at the John Smith Stadium ½ a mile away. We have a heated classroom equipped with a kitchen, changing area, and on-site facilities.
What do I need to learn before taking my CBT?
You should have a basic understanding of the Highway Code as you will be asked about traffic situations like junctions and roundabouts.
Do I need a theory test to do my CBT?
No, a theory test is not required for CBT, but you will need to answer questions about the Highway Code. A theory test is necessary for obtaining a full motorcycle licence.
Do I need a specific motorcycle theory test?
Yes, a car theory test is not sufficient; you must take a motorcycle-specific theory test.
Do I need a driving licence to do a CBT?
Yes, you need a UK provisional or full valid driving licence to take your CBT.
At what minimum age can I apply for a licence?
You can apply for your provisional licence three months before your 16th birthday.
What if I have lost my photo card driving licence?
You must present a valid driving licence before starting your CBT course. The old-style paper counterpart is acceptable if accompanied by a current passport.
What size motorcycle can I ride on a CBT certificate?
At age 16, you can ride a 50cc moped limited to 28 mph. From age 17, you can ride up to a 125cc motorcycle/scooter. You cannot ride on motorways or carry passengers.
Can I do my CBT on my own bike?
Yes, if it is roadworthy and has tax, insurance, and a current MOT. L Plates must be displayed both front and rear.
How long does my CBT certificate last?
The CBT certificate is valid for two years. There is no renewal reminder sent.
Do you offer gift vouchers?

What is DAS?
DAS allows you to ride any engine size motorcycle if you are over 24 and have completed both a CBT and a theory test, followed by Module 1 and Module 2 tests to obtain a full A category license.
I’m between the ages of 19 and 24. What licence can I obtain?
You will be eligible for an A2 licence, limiting you to a motorcycle no larger than 35kw or 47bhp. After 2 years, or upon reaching age 24, you can upgrade to an unrestricted license without retaking your CBT or theory.
What is an A1 licence?
From age 17, this licence allows you to ride a 125cc motorcycle on motorways and carry passengers, provided you have completed a CBT and theory test and passed both Module 1 and Module 2 tests.
What is involved in a Module 1 and Module 2 test?
Module 1 tests basic motorcycle control skills on a tarmac area. Module 2 involves a road ride under examination. All training is provided on-site.
